How to Secure Your Dedicated Server

By Kevin Abrahams

If you thought about a dedicated server, you will know that taking control of your website carries a number of benefits. Having the freedom to modify your settings to ensure your site runs in the way you want it to is a great bonus for everyone and more than justifies the cost of choosing a dedicated server.

One of the best features of modifying your dedicated server comes with the fact that you are able to set the security settings as you like them. Everyone knows that security is vital for websites but not everyone knows the best way to go about modifying these settings. Thankfully, plenty of assistance is available through whatever control panel you opt for.

One of the tasks that can really help secure your dedicated server is using SYN cookies. These SYN cookies are extremely helpful because they are able to block any connections that cannot be verified. Prevention is far better than the cure and immediately blocking any unsecure connections will greatly impact on the level of risk you expose yourself to.

Following on from this, opting for a firewall is another sensible option when securing your dedicated server. The benefits of using a firewall in a home computer are well known and it works in a similar fashion on a dedicated server. This should not be your only method of securing your server but it should be an important element.

Switches are also a great addition when trying to keep a dedicated server secure as they are able to filter, limit and prevent DDoS attacks and will also keep you informed of the presence of any DDoS attacks. Again, prevention should always be considered better than the cure and switches are a great way of improving your dedicate servers level of security, which is crucial in the current climate.
