Guide to Making Your Computer Faster

By Jamu Martin

The proportion of the world's population that has access to a computer increases every day thanks to the decreasing cost of hardware and parts. Whilst a decade ago components were costly and technically arduous to produce, they are now mass produced at reasonable rates, something that translates directly to the sale price. With this new widespread access comes a greater responsibility to ensure that the machines function efficiently and as intended.

As a computer ages, unavoidable signs of wear and tear will appear, however, there are a number of things that can be done before you completely write off your trusted computer. Downloading large swathes of films, music and files can saturate the system and cause it to grind to an inelegant halt. This can be particular troublesome for users that require their machines to complete work tasks or run businesses from home.

It is worth exercising reason when using a computer, especially when navigating the web. Watch out for untrustworthy web sites that might install unwanted speed guzzling Trojans or malware. Not only do these viruses affect performance speeds, they also allow malicious access to your personal information which could result in identity theft or credit card fraud. Fret not because by running routine antivirus and malware scans you can protect yourself and your computer from unwanted intrusion.

In some inevitable cases it may be time to consider purchasing a brand new one. As with everything, computers are subject to the effects of time; hardware wear and tear, obsolete technology or insufficient processing power for ever power hungry programs. A good gauge is to run a series of simple functions and to see how your machine responds.

For good measure it is always good to delete files and programs that are no longer needed. This frees up space for the operating system to run tasks and services at full capacity, which, in theory, should improve performance considerably. It may be in your interest to invest in an external storage device is you use a large of amount of space on a regular basis.
