Common Residential Plumbing Emergencies

Residential plumbing emergencies are a very common occurrence. Whether it is a burst pipe, sewer black up, water pressure problems, flooding in the basement, etc, a home plumbing emergency will require the services of a plumber. It is essential that homeowners are aware of common residential plumbing emergencies so that that if they face a plumbing emergency they will know how to immediately respond:

Below is a list of some of the common residential plumbing emergencies:

Basement or Property Flood: if discover flooding in the basement or property and there is a sewer smell, you may have a sewer back up. In such an emergency a plumber will need to be called to identify the cause of the back up, make the appropriate repair, and get the plumbing system working properly. If the basement is flooded, but it just water with no material and bad smell, you have a burst pipe or other damage that caused a fluid leak. A plumber can identify the cause of the flooding and make the repair.

Plumbing Pipe Damage: There are many things that can occur to the plumbing pipes causing an emergency. For instance, burst pipes are a common problem resulting in flooding. The burst may be the result of corrosion, cracks, or frozen pipes. In such a case, turn off the water and contact a plumber. In regions where the winters are really cold, a pipe can freeze. If the frozen pipe is in a location where you cannot reach it to unthaw it, call in a local plumber as the pipe needs to be unthawed to prevent a burst pipe.

Clogged Drains: Blockages in the drain lines are not always easy to clear. If you are unable to clear a clogged drain using conventional homeowner products, you should call in a plumber as it could be a much more serious matter that needs to be resolved before it gets worse.

Problems with Water Pressure: Low water pressure can occur due to leaky pipes, silent toilet leak, problems with the water pump, broken water pipes, etc. If you suddenly have low water pressure and have checked to see if water valves are opened to correct the problem and still cannot get the water pressure to increase, you should call a plumber as it can be a symptom of a more serious problem.

Backed Up Toilet that will not Clear: if you have a backed up toilet that you cannot clear which is preventing you from flushing the toilet, you should call in the plumber as you may have a blockage deep in the drain line or there may be a problem with the septic tank.

Residential plumbing systems are an important part of the home. Because residential plumbing systems are extensive, complex, and fragile, it is important not to attempt to fix serious plumbing problems as you could make things a lot worse. It is always a good decision to call in a plumber when there is a plumbing emergency. A professional licensed plumber has the tools and expertise to identify the cause of a plumbing problem and make the correct repair.
