The Advantages Of Sunlight Readable LCD Displays

By Alex Stein

The recent invention of sunlight readable LCD display screens has created considerable interest in areas of the industry that make use of such applications. The public and the business community have embraced the idea of digital displays and they are a common site in many cities around the world. The major benefactors in this sense have been players in the area of outdoor advertising as well as in industrial displays.

Outdoor advertising has been a major beneficially of this mode of displays. Long gone are the days when organizations needing to take advantage of the efficacy of this medium had to wait until it was late in the evening to display such adverts. As they can be displayed at places where there is adequate customer base, the potential of raising adequate interest is high.

Public information applications have also been launched to an effective degree on this platform. This has proved a major boost in the race to offer even a better way to reach the general public. It is not uncommon today to find a number of public displays and notifications such as road signs, public warnings, time display units as well as traffic information displayed conveniently on these applications. The impressiveness as well as efficacy of this idea has seen it become the method of choice in many areas of public messaging.

As may already be apparent, these devices have proven to be particularly energy efficient. This is way better than what was possible using a host of other technologies in the past as well as the present. This has become increasingly significant over the past decade or so with the unprecedented rise in global energy prices and economic recession. Organizations have thus embraced this solution model as the one best suited to their strategy of cutting down on costs.

Attempts to make outdoor display screens to consume little power are as old as the applications themselves. This is because players in the industry have for long identified their efficacy in transmission of information but stinted at the bills they had to foot in placing into effect the solutions. Readability in the past was implemented by increasing the brightness and contrast ratios vastly. Needless to say, this only read to even higher costs while still not offering adequate efficacy.

Another method routinely employed in ensuring traditional Liquid crystal displays around the world were effective during daylight hours was to install backlight for increased illumination. This is not especially practical for some applications as it makes the devices too bulky for certain usage areas. This is the chief reason why this form of implementation has not particularly caught on as a practical solution.

Another notable attempt from the past implemented in a bid to enhance readability was the use of anti-glare glass. This was soon found to be less than effective as a solution mainly because the glass can be too brittle for some usage areas. The visual appeal was also not improved to adequate enough levels.

The recent growth in the use of sunlight readable LCD display screens is not without justification. They offer an effective alternative for companies and public welfare organizations that need to present a message to the general public in a visually interesting manner. They have obvious advantages over more traditional media especially in terms of appeal as well as energy efficiency.
