The Basics of Custom Video for Business

By Jake Athey

Online custom video is not simply shooting a video of your marketing guy giving a sales pitch and posting it to YouTube. The video capture application on your smartphone is pretty good considering it's in a phone, but it is not good enough for an online business video that you will use to market your company. Then there is the question of editing, management and distribution. Even the bare basics of a good business video include more than a phone and an internet connection. Let's take a look.

It has been said a thousand different ways about a thousand different subjects, but it is still true: content is king. What you decide to shoot is the most important aspect of your business video. Look at it this way: how long will a user view your video before information about your product or service is offered? Are any of the questions most frequently asked by your clients addressed in the video? Does the production capture and keep the attention of the viewer, in terms of content? To answer these questions it takes honesty and knowing your customer.

Design your video according to your customer base. For example, if your business involves a constant influx of new clients who usually know little to nothing about your product or service, then it would be prudent to keep the content of the video simple. Keep your viewer engaged by using layman's terms and real-life scenarios. On the other hand, if your business is highly technical and serves clients who are themselves experts, then do not insult them with an overly-simplistic video. Make sure to incorporate your brand in an authentic way and without bombarding the viewer. If a video is all content and no brand, then the opportunity to draw viewers to make a purchase is lost. The key is in marrying appropriately conveyed content with sufficient branding to be memorable but not so much that it overshadows the message.

Now that content is planned out, let's take a brief look at equipment. As previously stated, a smartphone video camera will just not cut it. A hand held video camera, clip on microphone and tripod are essential. The overall difference will be in clarity, the ability to manipulate and edit the content, as well as professionalism. An actual single purpose video camera can offer high quality images that a dual purpose still shot camera cannot. Additionally, skipping the use of a tripod, no matter how steady the hand is, will detract from the overall integrity of the film. A clip on microphone is important, especially if there are interviews or monologues taking place. The voice quality will be clearer, which means the right message will be conveyed. There is nothing worse than having a fabulous product video with customer testimonials that no one can understand or hear. Having potential customers see and hear how wonderful your business is, is definitely worth the extra cash spent on the proper equipment.

If your business is relatively small, and the budget is even smaller, then save yourself some cash and use the video editing software included on your personal computer. It may not have all the bells and whistles of the big names like Sony Vegas or Adobe Premiere, but it will get the job done until your business can afford something better. In reality, the editing software is the expense that can be skipped if something has to be skipped at all. Of course, that also means shooting the video needs to be as well timed and well shot as possible.

Management and distribution of your amazing video, next to content, is probably the most important part of the process. Everyone likes to jump to YouTube for distribution because it is the single most popular video sharing platform available, but that doesn't mean it is ideal by itself. Distribution will definitely be widespread, but the high quality aspects of the video imaging are completely lost. Plus, branding severely diminished. The best way to manage and distribute your magnificent creation is with custom video player software that will not only retain the high quality technical qualities of the production, but will also promote the brand. A program that can allow you to manipulate the background to suit your brand will help to imprint the colours and images of your company in the memory of the viewer. Software with the ability to offer designs that can suit your website, even compliment it, can offer an overall better experience for the user. Ultimately the whole experience becomes a positive reinforcement of your product, company and brand.

The basics of online custom video are not hard to find or use, if there is a plan. Begin your project with illustrating your vision through detailed layouts and scripts. In this way, everyone involved in the project will know what to expect from the beginning. Then there is nothing left to do but create and distribute!
