Laptop Security for Mobile Workers

By Allyson Westcot

If you have ever watched the stories or any kind of report on the way to protect yourself when using an ATM or even paying at a cash register, you are probably aware of one of the least technological forms of data-theft there isâ€"someone simply watching you. ATMs might have things like concealed cameras where burglars can watch you punch in your PIN number. Or someone standing behind you in line at the grocery store can watch you punch your number in.

The same kind of problem exists when you employ a portable anywhere someone could presumably see. Not only could they see things like business data or purchaser payment information, depending on your industry, they could see you enter passwords and other info designed to give protection to the portable computer and the data stored on it.

Sturdy laptops can come with a number of security features that protect against Trojan horses, a variety of viruses and different kinds of hacking attempts. There are even security features designed to keep people out of secret info if the portable is stolen. The burglars won't be in a position to get into certain portions of the computerâ€"or any of it, dependent on the computerâ€"even though they may actually have the PC in front of them.

Fingerprint scanners won't permit access to data without the correct fingerprint identification, as an example. Smart-card readers and measures like chip-level security built into rugged laptops can also lock out thieves who don't have the proper authorization. This amount of security is essential for mobile employees whose PCs may contain or present access to a range of info.

For visual protection, a screen filter that keeps someone viewing at angle from seeing everything can be useful. Some software packages take a rather more active approach to information protection. Some software monitors the user with face recognition and keeps the screen clear while you are looking at it. If you turn your head to speak to someone or get up and walk away, the screen blurs. If somebody is behind you, the software will tell you and blur the screen. These sorts of security can help protect private information at work or on while traveling.
