Office Furniture Items For Where You Work

By Anny Caldwell

Office sizes and layouts vary. It is difficult to disregard key office furniture pieces that make the work space a more manageable. This will help you to be more efficient with your workload, and should definitely be considered.

A desk is the most logical place to start as it is absolutely necessary for working. You may not be able to immediately decide which desk you should choose, so these questions may be able to help: Can the desk provide accommodation for the equipment you need to complete your day-to-day tasks, including the computer, stationery supplies and telephone? Do you work more comfortably at a desk that is taller, or is height irrelevant? Is there enough storage space, like drawers, for other items? Is there enough room to stretch your legs comfortably underneath?

If luxury is not an issue when deciding on a suitable desk, think about making an investment in a piece that offers comfort, durability and visual appeal. Those with high-standing job positions tend to prefer wood. The range of woods and wood finishes available is practically infinite.

Think about the shape of the desk. If you need to save as much floor space as possible, think about the benefits of a corner desk. Alternatively, if you have the room, choosing an L-shaped desk gives you the luxury of getting more work done with less breaks to get up and retrieve files etc. This shape has more space for work, as well as more space for others who need to work alongside you.

As important as one's desk is the chair that accompanies the desk. A chair must be comfortable enough to be able to sit for long periods of time. However, it must also be firm and with good support. Choosing a chair that is too comfortable may result in too much relaxation and not enough work! Mobility should be considered as well. Will a swivel chair or one with wheels be beneficial to the work area?

Storage will be an important component of any work space. There are filing cabinets and bookshelves of all shapes and sizes to keep books and important documents safely stored. The variety in sizes affords the ability to save on space if necessary by perhaps opting for a taller item that is not as wide.

The walls can be just as useful for office furniture. Extra shelves or wall cabinets will help to save floor space. Use them for cork boards to pin notices or memos.
