Xbox 360 Red Ring Of Death - Helpful Tips And Common Mistakes

By Jack Livingston

Xbox 360 owners with expired warranties are faced with some hard choices about what to do about the red ring of death. Should they throw away their machine and get a new Xbox slim or perhaps buy a used console online? Another choice available to them is repairing their Xbox on their own.

This article won't go into the step by step details of repairing the ring of death. Instead it will discuss four tips that will help you avoid some very common mistakes made by thousands of people who attempt to do their own repair work.

1.) Dust buildup in the console leads to overheating problems. Vacuuming or blowing air doesn't always reach dust deposits deep within the console. While your console is disassembled, make an effort to clean dust buildup where ever you see it. Use a cloth and alcohol to clean stubborn grit deposits.

2.) When applying thermal paste the heat sinks, CPU, and GPU, be sure to apply a very thin layer. Too much thermal paste actually impedes heat flow, causing the console to overheat. Apply just enough so that the metal surfaces of the heat sinks, CPU, and GPU, no longer appear shiny.

3.) Unless you are an Xbox mod nerd, you should never get creative during the repair process. Specifically, you don't have creative license to substitute a specified part with something else. For example, if a nylon washer is specified, don't use one made from metal. This may cause a short. If a washer of a certain thickness is specified, anything else can lead to unexpected problems such as the heat sinks not making proper contact which means overheating problems.

4.) If you are considering buying a guide for the repair, you should realize that not all guides are equal in terms of accuracy and quality. Only consider well known guides that have been around for a while and have withstood public scrutiny. Well known guides have lots of reviews and opinions written about them online which allows you to make an informed purchase.
