What Defines A Good Graphic Designer

By Victori Ranalden

As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. That automatically increases the worth of graphic artists, doesn't it? With good reason, too. Graphic designers may be dime a dozen; good ones, those who understand how to create good graphics, aren't. It can also cost significantly in terms of time and efforts so it becomes even more important to find a good one in the first shot.

How do you find a "good" designer? That depends on your definition of good. It's rather difficult to explain why a good designer is good. When you see good graphics, you know it. It tells you that whoever created it has put in a lot of hard work. In fact, for you to find a good designer, you yourself need to have good taste.

You can learn how to find a good designer if you want. We will look at some of them:

Check out their work: The portfolio is easily the most important thing, even the most helpful one, on a graphic designer's website. Get an idea of work to see if it's what you want. It will tell you the nuances of their work as well: whether or not they pay attention to details, whether their work is something you actually like, etc.

Talk to them: Tell them what exactly you want, in as much detail as you can. The details are important: the more detailed you are, the better the end work is likely to be. I would also recommend looking at what they have to say.

Go online: You will find almost every designer has a website these days. Try looking for design companies that are near you. For instance, if you want to hire someone in Denver, do a lookup for 'denver graphic design' and you will find many designers.

It's easy, convenient and fast to do this online as opposed to asking for recommendations offline. You may still want the comfort of being able to talk to the designer in person before hiring them. If you want to talk before hiring a designer, it's much better to find someone who is near you.

In simple words, it's not easy to find a good designer, no matter how you look at it. Don't cut corners. Don't take the short route. Spend time and you will find the right designer for your needs. It'll definitely be worth the effort you put in at the end.
