Checklist for Easy Computer Maintenance

By Martin Posse

Owning a computer is like owning any other machine. It needs to be maintained and doing so requires some time and even a little money to be spent but it's worth your effort and expense for it will surely make your machine perform better in the years that you have it with you. Learn the basics in computer maintenance from the list below.

1. Always Remember to Remove Junk and Unwanted Files. There are two ways to do this maintenance step. First is by performing a disk cleanup. Your computer actually accumulates a lot of files when you use it in browsing the internet. Most of these files are useless like downloaded contents which are in your download folders.

2. Eliminate Junks, Temporary and Unwanted Files Some internet files stored on your browser takes up some space. Those files are actually junk and temporary which deserves to be deleted by doing a disk cleanup which is a free tool on your windows computer.

3. Secure your Computer. You can execute this maintenance checklist item by installing antivirus software. The free versions that are offered may protect you but in a limited level. Spending on a license will open your way to a full protection for your computer's software and its contents as well. Avoid using illegal versions of any software. Some computer geeks make professional versions of some programs free but you don't know what is in there. You may enjoy it for a short period of time but later on render your machine useless due to malwares and viruses that were brought by the illegal software you used.

4. Limit Your Downloads Your computer stores all downloads you get from any websites. Make sure that you're downloading your contents from trusted sites to avoid viruses and bad versions of programs which can lead to a more serious problem if not addressed right away.

5. Rid Away From Bad Websites If you're fond of visiting XXX websites then it's time that you cut off that habit. Most of these websites contain automatic-install malwares, spywares and other worms that can destroy your hard drive and render your machine useless at any future time.

6. Organize your Files. The 6th item on the checklist is to always put your files in designated folders and to what directory it belongs. This not only saves you time but also makes your computer easier to manage. Delete all files that are not used and keep those that you will need in the future.

7. Regularly Defragment your Hard Disk Your drive accumulates all the files you store on your machine. In time, as you download, install and do more tasks on your computer, your drive develops some unused packets of disk space which makes it slow. De-fragmenting your drive helps eliminate these packets and organizes all related contents into one area in your drive which then saves your computer some battery juice.

These are just some of the things you can do to maintain your computer. Doing these things regularly will assure you a fast processing speed and very good computer performance.
