Rises Above Expectations - Top Rated Digital Camera Critique

By Allison Roberts

I'm waiting for a reply on this. To their credit, Olympus tech support is prompt, once you get past the phone tree.

This camera has got to be the most unintuitive point and shoot I've ever seen or used. I don't even care about the image quality, even if it were outstanding, the interface and poor design would steer me away. We took it in the pool the next day and noticed it had water in the battery compartment, even with the latch set to lock. Luckily we went back to the room and I had one day left to request a return with Amazon, and since it's defective they paid the return shipping.

He more than likely put the card in before he hooked the camera up to his computer. By the way, make sure you hook the camera up to your computer BEFORE you put your memory card in. The pictures I have taken both indoors and outdoors are clear not grainy and the HD video is awesome. This camera even has sound when previewing your vids from camera, which I love since my Kodak didn't. The picture quality is terrible. I spent days trying all possible combinations of quality/speed/lighting settings, but the colors always come out unforgivably washed. Well, I've seen the results and they are fabulous! She was a little leery of taking that first underwater shot but has taken some fantastic pictures. It took forever to turn on and to switch between modes. I missed a lot of shots because of that. I love this camera, and its predecessor the Olympus 770 SW (which worked fine, but I lost it). However, after less than 3 weeks of use, it will turn on but then nothing else happens, and the power button has to be pressed twice to turn it off, because the first time the lens cover closes then opens again. This model has a couple of serious problems that irritates us. First, when we push on button, the lens door open immediately but the camera is not available to take.

I am not a pro when it comes to cameras, but I do know that 5 seconds from the time you push the power button until you can take a picture is unacceptable. I hadn't realized Olympus recommends changing the protective seal every year, so maybe that was the cause.

I really like it. I've owned this camera for about 3 months. I took it down to about 6 feet of salt water and it didn't miss a beat. The pictures were crisp, the video worked very well and I couldn't be happier. With my other cameras I would never have use the software that came with it, but on this one I will. Awesome camera and I would defiantly buy a refirb again if I saw something I wanted.

One thing I don't like, functionality-wise, is that when you take a picture and the review of the image pops up, you can't delete it at that same time. You have to go into playback mode then delete the picture, then go back into shooting mode.
