My computer is running slow what should I do to speed it up?

By Myke Longo

Are you wondering "Why is my computer so slow?" and aren't sure what to do to speed it up? The truth is, every computer can and most likely will slow down significantly over time. Here are some important things to check on to make sure your computer is running as fast as possible.

Malware - Every computer is vulnerable to all kinds of malware, and if your computer becomes infected your system will probably slow down tremendously. Because your computer can become infected at any second, you'll need security software to actively protect and eliminate malware from your computer. Malware includes every and any kind of threat that will infect and slow down your computer. Most security programs are optimized for certain computer setups, so you may want to choose one that fits in well with your system. For example, if your computer is connected to the internet you'll want to make sure you install an internet security program that has extra protection from internet threats. Any time you wonder "Why is my computer so slow all of a sudden?", the very first thing you should do is check for is malware using your security software. If you suspect your computer is running slow due to being infected in malware, make sure you use every tool and resource available to you to make sure all malware is removed and isn't comprising system performance.

Msconfig - Does your computer take forever to startup? Chances are there are many unnecessary programs and services that are currently set to startup with your computer. If your computer is running on a Windows operating system, you can use the keyboard shortcut (Windows Key + R) to launch the Run window and then type in msconfig to open the System Configuration window. Next, select the Startup tab at the top and deselect any programs or services in this list that you don't need starting up with your computer. The more items you can safely uncheck on this list, the faster your computer will startup.

RAM - Chances are your computer can handle much more RAM then it currently has, especially if your operating system type is 64-bit which can handle a lot more RAM compared to 32-bit systems. RAM is used to provide active programs with memory, so in theory the more RAM your computer has, the more high memory programs you can run at once. Because no data is ever permanently stored directly on the RAM, you can safely upgrade the RAM on your computer without any data loss.

(SSD) Solid State Drive - Still using a traditional hard disk drive? It's time to get a solid state drive which are much faster and more powerful compared to traditional hard disk drives. Solid state drives eliminate file fragmenting and can load files and programs significantly faster because data is not stored in fragments. Unlike hard disk drives, solid state drives contain no physical moving parts such as spinning discs or a moving read/write head which allows for much faster performance.

Bundled Programs - Tons of brand new computers come installed with unnecessary software that you most likely don't need or will ever use. Keeping programs installed on your computer that you don't need or use will only waste valuable memory and more clutter to your system. For your computer to run at its optimal performance, you'll definitely need to have some available free hard drive space. If you're running low on memory you should eliminate as many unnecessary programs as possible.
