Developing Your Space MMORPG Player

By Adelle A. Anderson

Massively multiplayer online role playing games are being developed by a growing number of game companies that want to get into the hot market of Internet based space MMORPG games. These games have several features in common with traditional role playing games for video game consoles, but include some notable differences as well. One major difference between the two genres is that MMORPG's put you in contact with hundreds of other players and force you to team up with them. But one of the most notable similarities that you will see running through nearly all role playing games is a progression system that helps you develop your character's skills.

Early in the majority of space MMORPG games, you are asked to determine your character's class, which is a broad skill set that will determine their strengths, weaknesses, and abilities. It may appear like one class is better equipped than another, but in reality they all have their own strengths and weaknesses; each class must also be played differently. For instance, a class that is made to be offensive will probably gain lots of powerful attacks early in the game whereas a supportive healer type will not gain powerful attacks until much later in the game.

Character progress is kept track of with a numeric level in the considerable majority of space MMORPG games; while a level system is common, the way new levels are calculated is often distinct. This experience can be obtained in several ways, such as defeating enemies, completing quests and other challenges, collecting specific items, and working together with other players in groups. Specific levels bring new abilities, improved items, and other benefits that make many gamers anxious to reach new levels in their game as quickly as possible.

Some players, though, get overly caught up in level up their character and forget to enjoy other aspects of their game. You may encounter some tasks that offer you good in-game rewards but will not give you large amounts of experience; taking on these challenges will still help you improve your character.

Unlike console games that have specific ending points, space MMORPG games offer you endless possibilities and constantly present your character with new challenges. Building a powerful character and getting them to a high level takes time and will also teach you how to work together with other players as you overcome enemies and win battles together.
