Why would I get an Android phone?

By May Tullie

Android has come a long since 2005 when Google purchased a relatively unknown company called Android Inc. Over the course of 10 years Google opened up the OS and let anyone get a hold of, change, customize, use and distribute it for free.

Freedom may be the keyword that sets apart Android from all other smartphones available in the market. Apple has a tyrannical like clutch on its 'I' product and Blackberry is not very different. In contrast you're able to install any software you would like with an Android phone. The app market is not restricted to what someone within a review department deems to be suitable.

With this level of liberty, software builders are ditching Apple and embracing the liberty which creating for Android offers. Nowadays there are thousands of programs available, many of them are even practical! For example, the default messaging application is nothing to scream about on the Android nonetheless it does not need to be as there are over a dozen free applications which you could download that will replace the internal texting application. This level of personalization and choice is just not available on other smartphones where the manufacturers want to tie you down to only their applications.

Because it is much easier for developers to create applications and because there is more competition you will notice that many apps that you must buy on the iPhone and Blackberry are free of charge on the Android, or at a minimum there will be a free 'lite' version available so you are saving on the expense of customizing your mobile phone.

If you are anything like the average Internet user you probably use multiple Google web services such as Gmail, Gtalk, Drive and Search. Although you can acquire these services on other mobile phones, the Android has produced software which incorporate and sync effortlessly with your smartphone. For example, say you add a new contact into your address book, Android is intelligent enough to update your Google contacts list so if you ever lose your phone then all your important contact details is saved in Google's cloud services.

Safety is clearly a major element and with android usage becoming increasingly popular, fraudsters and criminal gangs are actively seeking to get access to the private information people store on their mobile phones.. Even though you can get some good defense applications for Android you can be sure that Google has always got your back using its remote kill switch ability to remove any harmful programs that could have found their way in to your smartphone.

Finally there is the important aspect of choice. With an iPhone you are limited to one unit, not very good if you want to express yourself. The Blackberry targets companies and the models are definitely not inspiring. In contrast because the Android Operating System is a free operating system which you can use without royalties, many large phone manufacturers are creating Android based mobile phones. You now have the choice of model, choice of styles, choice of features and above all find a cell phone that matches your price range.
